One of my many assignments required from me for my internship is this photo essay. It is here to showcase my hard work at Space 4 Art in a more creative, non-traditional way.
I have chosen to separate my photo essay into three different chunks. They are separated into either a phase, aspect or project I worked on. Click the button below each section to see more photos! |
WOrk EnvironmentI absolutely loved the work environment at Space 4 Art. I loved seeing the huge piles of wood, teams of people working hard, the loud noises, being surrounded by tools, everything. I can't say it was a new environment because not only am I used to working in places like this through school but I grew up in construction sites. My house is always getting renovated so it was definitely not an uncomfortable place to be in. Something I worked really hard on during the first week was just trying to be aware of my surroundings so if anyone was looking for something I would know exactly where it was, or if someone was walking through the site I could give them a heads up about where they were stepping so that they wouldn't get hurt.

The BeginningStarting day one of my internship at Space 4 Art, we worked on both moving out of the old building and into the new one next door while simultaneously building offices, studios, & a living space for musicians.
When I got to Space 4 Art, there wasn't much moved out of the old building but they had started to build the upstairs loft area built from the old trusses of the new building. Since we were adding so much weight and also require a safety factor (added support for even more weight than necessary), we needed to reinforce the almost 80 year old trusses. We attached stronger wood, bolts and braces all over the existing trusses making them stronger. Even stronger than necessary as we realized later. This was my favorite place to work and where I got a lot closer to my coworkers. |
AmphitheatreBy my second week at internship I was introduced to their Permanent Home site on Market st. This is where the freshman from my school and seniors from King Chavez High School came to help build the new gallery space and amphitheatre. My mentor told me that I was going to be a leader of a group like my other coworkers which I thought was so exciting and amazing in itself but also that I was in charge of the entire construction of the stage and amphitheatre! This project was my baby and came with so struggles and celebrations. I worked on it 4-7 hours a day, in the hot sun battling all the challenges it brought with it. The main struggle was that after leveling each step perfectly it would settle and slide down the hill it was built on overnight throwing everything off so I would have to fix it everyday after it happened. We solved this by bracing every step to each other under the steps so it wouldn't be seen. This project all came together into the big opening of the space and it was a beautiful event.
