Kaitlin DouglassKaitlin hails from the small town of Amarillo, Texas where she grew up riding horses to school and chasing tumbleweed. Not quite! But she did enjoy a lot of steak, country music and state fairs before heading up to Philly to attend college. Kaitlin majored in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and minored in Nanotechnology and Hispanic Studies. While in school, she played viola in the symphony orchestra and was an avid participant in Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. Through her volunteer work, she spent a great deal of time in high school classrooms tutoring math and science and began to develop a passion for teaching students in a meaningful and effective (and exciting!) way. Digital PortfolioCaroline ChenIt’s true what they say about Tarheel Fans — that they’re “Tar Heel born,” and “Tar Heel bred.” Caroline was born in Chapel Hill on the glorious campus of The University of North Carolina and grew up in Raleigh, NC.
Eighteen years later, she ended up where she started, studying at UNC and earning a B.S. degree in Chemistry with a biochemistry concentration and an English minor. Through it all, she’s still an avid Tarheel fan and follows their basketball team every season. Upon graduation in May 2005, she joined the Teach For America movement in Los Angeles and became a middle school science and math teacher. After teaching in inner-city Los Angeles for the past four years, Caroline finally moved down to San Diego at the coaxing of her now-husband Matt (who’s a Duke alum by the way and are the Tar Heel''s arch rivals). Matt and Caroline tied the knot in August of 2009 in La Jolla and are now the Yangs! After she got married, she started teaching 10th grade Math/Chem at High Tech High Chula Vista in the Fall of 2009. In her five years, she’s developed a love for teaching and inspiring students to think about how science and math are highly applicable in the every day world and in real-life situations.
