Project IntroFor this project we were asked to write about something we are passionate about, whether that be music, food, a theme park, a movie, or really anything. It pushed us to create not only the best piece we've ever written and something we're proud of but also to truly enjoy the writing process. Real-world writing purposes field guideThe purpose of this field guide was to help us differentiate the different types of writing purposes and to help us find which writing structure works best with our topic. 1 topic=18 topicsThe cool thing about the 1 topic=18 topics is that we got to choose something that were passionate about then break it into 18 different reasons and subtopics of why were passionate about that topic! I chose a combination of express and reflect and inform and explain. I thought it was a wise choice being that I was conducting a study and reflecting on my experience. Five minute quick-writesThe five minute quick-writes helped get a feel for what its like to write each writing purpose. This helped us choose which out of our 18 topics we wanted to write about. Down draftA down draft is where you just GET IT DOWN. Word vomit is a good way to describe it. You have an idea and you either write bullets of what you want to write about or you just type. Its like a first draft, only cooler. I would have a link to my down draft below but my version of a down draft for this particular piece was a dream journal. I wrote down my research and everyday experience with dreaming and lucid dreaming. reverse-Engineered mentor textThis also was an assignment to help us with structure. We chose "mentor texts" that had a similar structure to what we wanted to achieve for our writing. Final DraftMy favorite part about my writing is my explanation about the 5 stages of sleep. I think they were a good foundation to the piece and I went into detail and explained them thoughtfully and thoroughly. A part of the process of creating this piece I would like to include in writing my next piece would be thoughtfully choosing the right writing purposes. This kept me focused and organized on what I was going to write about, and I just found this really beneficial. ReflectionI initially wanted to write about Disney but I feel like people would expect that from me. I love all things Disney and everyone knows it. It took me a while to do but I started to think about all the random things I got really into. Then I remembered a documentary I saw on Netflix a while back about lucid dreaming. The only thing I think I would change is that I would have wanted to started my study earlier and I would have wanted to write an actual down draft instead of the dream journal. The reason is because it would've made starting my piece easier. Other than that, I'm proud of my work.

Project descriptionThe purpose of this project was celebrate and recognize the lives of the people in our community while they're still here and alive. I interviewed my grandmother. I was curious to know more about how she grew up and her relationship with my grandpa. I rarely had deep conversations with my grandfather and know that hes gone, I really cant anymore. So I used this project as an opportunity to really connect with my grandma. Pre-interview processI prepared for my interview by creating a list of questions for my interview. Because my grandmother didn't feel like she had any strong connection to any historical period in her life, I made the questions more about what it was like living in Tijuana and then moving to America as a kid. I also asked about the cultural differences, her relationships with her siblings, meeting my grandpa and his life. As a class, we prepared for our interviews by going over what a good interview and a bad interview looks like . We also watched Story Corp interviews to get inspiration for our own interviews! The interview. My interview started off a little bumpy but as we started getting deeper in the conversation we got more comfortable and things ran a lot more smoothly. Speaking about her childhood isn't really something she dies often and I could tell that she got really into it. As for me, I started very structured which I didn't feel was going to give me a quality interview so I dumped all the questions I had planned and just had a conversation with her. That was when I started to get the interview I wanted. Interview outlineThe interview outline was basically just a brief overview of important points in the interview. Script.Link to hoSb Page.Reflection.I interviewed my grandmother because I was really bummed that I never got the chance to do this sort of thing with my grandfather. I learned a lot about what her life was like growing up and about how my grandparents met. I knew that speaking about my grandfather was going to be tough for my grandma because he passed away so recently but I felt like she was using the interview to reflect on good memories and to celebrate his life. This project inspired me to devote the time to speak to everyone else in my life. My friends, my aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, sibling, grandparents and great grandparents.
1. from what we did this week, do you think will be most helpful for you when you're conducting your interview? Definitely planning ahead. Creating a list of questions and possible follow up questions will help me stay organized and be proactive. Attached below is a list of questions I plan on asking my interviewee. 2. How will you apply what you're learning about interviewing to other aspects of your life, now or in the future? I think that what we've learned about interviewing is going to be really beneficial during junior internships and future jobs in general. We learned about how to be a good interviewer and how to be a good interviewee. 3. How are you going to take your work on this project to a higher level than the work you've done in the past? I know I already tapped into this in a previous answer but the purpose of these interviews are to share the stories of the people in our community while they're still here so I need to make sure that I prepare questions that are going to allow me to get to know my interviewee on a deeper, more personal level.
